Comment

In 2016, the V Centenary of the death of Ferdinand II of Aragon, one of the most important Spanish monarchs of all time, is fulfilled.

Ferdinand II (10 March 1452 – 23 January 1516) was King of Aragon from 1479 until his death in 1516. As the husband and co-ruler of Queen Isabella I of Castile, he was also King of Castile from 1475 to 1504 (as Ferdinand V). He reigned jointly with Isabella over a dynastically unified Spain; together they are known as the Catholic Monarchs. Ferdinand is considered the de facto first king of Spain, and was described as such during his reign, even though, legally, Castile and Aragon remained two separate kingdoms until they were formally united by the Nueva Planta decrees issued between 1707 and 1716.

The Aljafería Palace is a fortified medieval palace built during the second half of the 11th century in the Taifa of Zaragoza in Al-Andalus, present day Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain. It was the residence of the Banu Hud dynasty during the era of Abu Jaffar Al-Muqtadir. The palace reflects the splendour attained by the Taifa of Zaragoza at the height of its grandeur. It currently contains the Cortes (regional parliament) of the autonomous community of Aragon.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Ferdinand II of Aragon 100 Euro gold coin is that it features a unique design that showcases the monarch's legacy. The obverse side of the coin depicts a portrait of Ferdinand II, while the reverse side features an image of the King's crown and scepter, symbolizing his authority and power. The coin's design was created by the Spanish artist, José María Penedo, and it is considered a rare and valuable collector's item among numismatists.
