As the year 2019 marks the 200th anniversary of the opening of Museo Nacional del Prado, Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre-Real Casa de la Moneda is dedicating the sixth issue of the collection Treasures of Spanish Museums to this major event.
The complete set is comprised of six coins: three gold 2-escudo coins and three square pieces in silver.
The reverse of each of the coins, which are finished in proof quality, is illustrated with a small display of some of the most iconic works kept at the Prado. The obverse, which is common to all, reproduces the logo of the Prado Bicentenary, together with an image of the seated statue of Velázquez, which was executed by Aniceto Marinas in 1899 and now stands in front of Puerta de Velázquez at the Prado.

The Museo del Prado, officially known as Museo Nacional del Prado, is the main Spanish national art museum, located in central Madrid. It houses collections of European art, dating from the 12th century to the early 20th century, based on the former Spanish royal collection, and the single best collection of Spanish art.

Pasiteles (Greek: Πασιτέλης; sometimes called Pasiteles the Younger) was a Neo-Attic school sculptor from Ancient Rome at the time of Julius Caesar. Pasiteles is said by Pliny to have been a native of Magna Graecia, and to have been granted Roman citizenship. He worked during a period where there was a demand for copies of, or variations on, noted works of Greek sculpture; the demand was met by the workshops of Pasiteles and his pupils Stephanus and Menelaus and others, several of whose statues are extant.

Interesting fact

The 200 years of the Prado Museum - School of Pasiteles coin is a non-circulating coin minted in 2019 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain. One interesting fact about this coin is that it features an image of the famous Spanish artist Diego Velázquez's painting "Las Meninas" on one side, which is considered one of the greatest works of art in the history of Spanish art.
