Comment

Under the name 'Numismatic Jewels', in 2008 a new series of collector coins begins in which unique pieces of Hispanic numismatics will be reproduced, and which will continue over the next few years.
The fifth issue in this series is dedicated to the Pragmática y Reales Ordenanzas (the Pragmatic and Royal Ordinances) promulgated in Medina del Campo in 1497 by the Catholic Monarchs. Spain's modern monetary history originated with the reform proclaimed by the Catholic Monarchs in the above-mentioned 1497 Pragmatic, that would set values for and stabilize the characteristics of the gold and silver coins (the excelente, the medio excelente and the silver real) that were allowed to be minted by the different mints in the Spanish peninsula, together with the coin designs and rates of exchange with the coinage of other European countries, particularly with those lying within the area of the ducat which, having been created in Venice, had become unrestricted coinage in the Mediterranean area.

Interesting fact

The 2014 Spanish 100 Euro Gold Coin (2 Excelentes of Catholic Monarchs) has a unique feature - it has a hidden security element that can be viewed under ultraviolet light. When exposed to UV light, the coin reveals a latent image of the royal crown, adding an extra layer of authenticity and security to the coin.
