Reverse

A heraldic lion supporter carved into the west side of the sandstone-lined entryway, deliberately positioned to convey the towering height (1.8 m) of its real-life counterpart, while gold plating highlights the Union Flag and the Shield of the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom. The sculpted figure is paired with an ornamental flourish, whose floral motif is based on a frieze that also adorns the Centre Block’s grand entrance. The reverse includes the value, the country name, and the date.

Comment

The fourth and final piece comes full circle at the official entrance to Parliament, where anyone wishing to pass must do so under the watchful eye of a fearsome, majestic-looking animal guardian. Standing guard with his unicorn counterpart, the lion has stood on the west side of the sandstone entrance since 1938. The 1.8-metre-high sculpture was inspired by the lion bearing the coat of arms of Canada and the United Kingdom. It was created by a team headed by the Dominion's first sculptor, Cléophas Soucy. Imposing, the roaring lion of Centre Block is the last of our Guardians of Parliament. He reigns supreme on this 10 oz. silver coin with selective gold plating, where his finely chiseled depiction pays incomparable tribute to the important legacy of Canada's parliamentary sculptors.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the "Keepers of Parliament: The Lion" silver coin is that it features a unique reverse design, showcasing the lion statue that sits atop the Canadian Parliament's Peace Tower in Ottawa. The lion is depicted in a standing position, with its front paws resting on a shield bearing the maple leaf, Canada's national symbol. This design is a nod to the longstanding tradition of the lion as a symbol of strength, courage, and loyalty, and serves as a reminder of the important role that the Parliament plays in upholding these values.
