During the First World War, the last glimpse tens of thousands of soldiers had of their homeland after leaving the port of Quebec was the steep cliffs of the Gaspé Peninsula. A similar landscape awaited those departing from Halifax, Nova Scotia, who also saw Canada's rugged coastline disappear over the horizon.Would they ever see their loved ones again? What hardships awaited them? We can only guess at the thoughts running through the soldiers' minds as they crossed the Atlantic.
Britain declared war on Germany on August 4, 1914, and in October, the largest convoy ever mobilized by Canada left for Europe. This piece captures a scene experienced on countless ships setting sail. The motif draws the viewer into the scene, which remains as moving today as it was a hundred years ago.
A commemoration of the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, a conflict that gave rise to countless scenes of tragedy, courage and triumph. Canada would forge an international reputation and ultimately emerge with the maturity of a country worthy of the name.
