Comment
When gold makes historyAt the end of the 19th century, rumors began to circulate of rivers so rich in gold that it was being collected virtually unscreened. From California and even distant Asia, prospectors flocked to the Cariboo region, in what is now the province of British Columbia.
The gold rush was a perilous affair, rivaled only by ingenuity and tenacity. The young British colony almost collapsed under demographic pressure as it built the famous Cariboo Road in 1862. A misguided merchant even arrived with camels, thinking he could outwit the harshness of the environment! His enterprise was short-lived, as was the rush itself: it took only five years to extract the bulk of the precious metal, worth almost four million dollars in 1863 alone, a colossal sum equivalent to tens of millions of our current dollars.
