The Spirit of Haida Gwaii $100,000 coin in 99.999% pure gold is a proud Canadian achievement. Its elegant walnut collector's box and accompanying hardcover book were also designed and manufactured in Canada.BILL REID (1920-1998)
Born in 1920 in Victoria, British Columbia, Bill Reid was an eminent Haida sculptor, engraver and master silversmith, and one of the greatest artists Canada has ever known. His father was of German-Scottish descent, while his mother was a member of the Haida Nation. Bill Reid developed a passion for traditional Haida art, which became his creative subject.
Over the course of his life, Reid created more than 1,500 exceptional works. His sculptural masterpiece The Spirit of Haida Gwaii is considered his greatest achievement and has earned him international recognition.
The Royal Canadian Mint's Spirit of Haida Gwaii coin is the world's first 10 kg 99.999% pure gold coin. Its face value of $100,000 is unmatched by any other 10 kg coin or any other uncirculated numismatic coin in the world. The Royal Canadian Mint has minted only one coin with a face value exceeding that of The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, a 100 kg bullion coin in 99.999% pure gold, minted in 2007, with a face value of $1,000,000.
This oversized coin (180 mm) honors Bill Reid's monumental sculpture on the reverse.
