Comment
Balasagun (Balassagun, Balasaghun, Karabalsagun; Chinese: 八剌沙衮; pinyin: bālàshāgǔn, Persian: بلاساغون) is an ancient Sogdian city located in present-day Kyrgyzstan, in the Chu River valley between Bishkek and Lake Yssyk Kul.It was founded by the Sogdians, a people of Iranian origin whose language, Sogdian, was still spoken in the region in the 11th century.
It was the capital of the Kara-Khitans from the 12th century until its capture by the Mongols in 1218. The Mongols called it Gobalik (pretty city). However, this city should not be confused with Karabalghasun in Mongolia, capital of the Uyghur khaganate (Source: www.wikipedia.org).
Interesting fact
The 10 Som coin from Kyrgyzstan, issued in 2016 to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of Balasagyn, features a unique selective gilding technique on its reverse side, which creates a striking contrast between the silver and gilded areas.
