The Kataragama religious complex is a collection of modest shrines, of which one, dedicated to Kataragama deviyo (also known as Skanda, Murukan or Kartikeya), is the most important.Murukan is Sri Lanka's guardian deity: 'The red god seated on the blue peacock, ever young and resplendent' is the Tamils' favorite god.
Kataragama is also home to the ancient Buddhist stupa Kiri Vehera.
