Comment

The obverse design depicts Sigiriya frescoes, the unique archaeological heritage site of Matale district.

King Kashyapa (AD 477–495) built his palace on top of this rock and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. The name of this place is derived from this structure; Sīnhāgiri, the Lion Rock.

The Sigiriya frescoes, painted on a natural ledge of the rock, owe their excellent state of preservation to the fact that they are sheltered from light and rain. Their date of completion, the 5th century, remains a matter of debate.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Circulating commemorative coin 10 Rupees (Matale) 2013 from Sri Lanka is that it features an image of the historic Matale Fort, which was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese and later expanded by the Dutch. The fort is an important archaeological site and tourist attraction in Sri Lanka.
