Comment
The obverse design depicts Sri Maha Bodhi of Buddhist Cultural Heritage site of Anuradhapura District.Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a historical sacred fig tree. The Bodhi or Pagoda fig tree is also known as the Buddha tree because of its Buddhist history. Indeed, it was under a pipal (its common name) that Buddha is said to have attained Bodhi, i.e. enlightenment, at Bodh Gaya in India.
This is believed to be a tree grown from a cutting of a branch of the historical sacred fig tree, Sri Maha Bodhi, brought from India to Sri Lanka by King Ashoka's daughter.
Planted in the 3rd century BC, this makes it the oldest tree planted by man in the world.
