Date of issue: 16 JUN 1995The ballet "The Sleeping Beauty" was created by the great Russian composer Peter Tchaikovsky in 1889. It was first performed on the stage of St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre on January 3, 1890. Based on Charles Perault's fairy tale about the anguished love between Princess Aurora and Prince Desire and the triumph of good over evil, it was choreographed by Marius Petipa. The libretto to the ballet was written by I. A. Vsevolzhsky, Director of the Imperial Theatres.
