The 10 Réis coin was the first coin to feature a portrait of King Luís I of Portugal, who reigned from 1861 to 1889. The coin was designed by the artist José Simões de Alarcón, and it features a youthful portrait of the king on the obverse side, surrounded by the inscription "LUIZ I REI DE PORTUGAL".
