Comment
Founded in 1601, the East India Company was established with a Royal Charter from Queen Elizabeth I. Around this same time, the Queen gave the East India Company permission to issue its own coinage, most of which was made to facilitate the company’s growing international trade in the East Indies. In 1657, Oliver Cromwell issued the East India Company a charter to govern and fortify the island of St. Helena off the west coast of Africa. First sighted and explored by the Portuguese a century earlier, St. Helena had abundant fresh water and trees. The EIC would eventually settle the island as an important refueling base for its ships moving between the British Isles and the East Indies.
