Comment

The 2021 strike introduced four security features:

  • A latent image which changes from a padlock to Britannia’s famous trident

  • Surface animation bringing the background of sparkling waves to life

  • Micro text gives both decoration and protection – ‘an ornament and a safeguard’

  • Britannia’s shield bearing the Union Flag accented with tincture lines

The 2023 strike was issued in the autumn of 2022 after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and was only produced in a limited number.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique 5th portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by sculptor Jody Clark, which was first introduced in 2015. This portrait features a more mature and regal representation of the Queen, with a slightly different crown and a more detailed rendition of her necklace and earrings. This design change marked a significant departure from the previous portrait that had been used on British coins for over 20 years, and was seen as a way to modernize the currency and honor the Queen's long reign.
