National Bank of Cuba (official), founded on 1948, assumed Central Bank role in 1950 (issuing of currency, financial control, and keeping the international reserves). Banknotes bearing 1949 year, were first issued by NBC in 1950 (Owing to delay for being printed overseas).
On October 13th., 1960 Government decided to nationalize all 37 foreign banks, with the exception of Royal Bank, and Nova Scotia, from Canada, that were bought some time later.

On 1997 the monetary control was passed to the Central Bank of Cuba, created to assume these functions.

The first president of the National Bank of Cuba was Felipe Pazos Roque, and the first president of the Central Bank of Cuba was Francisco Soberón Valdés.
