Comment
The Port-au-Prince is a large privateer sailing ship weighing almost 500 tons, armed with 24 12-pounder cannons and 8 carronades of the same caliber.Initially built in France for the French Navy, she was captured by the Royal Navy in Port-au-Prince and purchased in 1805 by a London shipowner, Robert Bent, who assigned a dual mission to her crew: to sail to the New World in order to seize Spanish treasure, and if they failed to do so, to go whaling in the Pacific.
Under the command of Captain Duck, the ship set sail from Gravesend on February 12, 1805. On November 29, 1806, it dropped anchor on the island of Lifuka in Tonga's Ha'apai archipelago, where it was attacked by Polynesian warriors who massacred the captain and thirty-five sailors - out of a crew of ninety-six - and set fire to it, sinking it with its treasure.
