The coin commemorates the victims of the Crimean Tatar genocide. On 18 May 1944, the Soviet regime started removing Crimean Tatars from their historical motherland, Crimea. About half of the deportees died as a result of the forcible deportation and restriction to means for their existence.Interesting fact
The interesting fact about this coin is that it was issued to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the Crimean Tatar genocide, which occurred in 1944 when the Soviet Union deported over 200,000 Crimean Tatars from their homeland in Crimea to other parts of the Soviet Union, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people. The coin's design features an image of a Crimean Tatar family and the words "Remembrance for the Victims of Crimean Tatar Genocide" in Ukrainian.
