The Swiss National Park is located in the Western Rhaetian Alps, in eastern Switzerland. It is within the canton of Graubünden, in the Engadin valley, on the border with Italy. It is part of the worldwide UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The alpine marmot (Marmota marmota) is a large ground-dwelling squirrel. It is found in high numbers in mountainous areas of central and southern Europe, at heights between 800 and 3200 m in the Alps, Carpathians, Tatras and Northern Apennines.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Pattern 10 Francs (Alpine marmot; trial) 2010 from Switzerland is that it features a unique design of an Alpine marmot, a small mammal native to the Swiss Alps, on its obverse side. This design was specifically created for a trial run of coins and was not ultimately adopted as the official design for the Swiss 10 Franc coin. As a result, this coin is considered a rare and collectible item among numismatists.
