The Uprising of 1953 started on 16 June with a strike of construction workers in East Berlin after the East German government had raised work norms (= production goals), taxes and prices. The protests spread to other parts of East Germany the next day and involved at least 400,000 demonstrators throughout the country. The rebellion was brutally suppressed by Soviet troups, symbolized by the tank tracks on the coin.Interesting fact
