Hanseatic cities in Belgium
Did you know that the trade network of the Hanseatic League extended to more than 200 cities in Europe: from small, charming provincial towns to proud major cities that still count in international trade today? Just think of Hamburg, Cologne and Frankfurt... of Swedish Stockholm or Polish Krakow... or – closer to us – of Dutch Kampen and our very own Venice of the North: romantic Bruges!

Just like our guilds at the time, the Hanses aimed to establish a cooperative alliance between practitioners of the same economic activity: in this case the German merchants who traded around the Baltic Sea and the adjacent areas in Northern Europe. This way they could better defend their commercial interests, provide more resistance against greedy princes and also adequately protect themselves against piracy and other setbacks. Unity is strength, and people had long understood this – even in the Middle Ages.

The Belgian Hanseatic League of Four...
As a flourishing trading city, Bruges enjoyed the rare honor of running one of the four contors of the Hanseatic League. This trade office also functioned as a kind of foreign chamber of commerce and even had consular powers. However, with the silting up of the Zwin, the importance of Bruges as a priority location decreased and in 1520 the office was moved to Antwerp. In 1564 the stately Hansa House was built, but it quickly lost its function as a trading center when our Scheldt city fell prey to the Spanish Fury.

As for our Artevelde city, thanks to its particularly flourishing cloth industry, Ghent would grow in the Middle Ages into one of the richest cities in Europe and also... into a valued member of the German Hanseatic club! The Walloon Dinant received the same honor thanks to its strategic location on the Meuse and the flourishing trade route that connected Cologne with Paris.

Interesting fact

The coin , the 10 Euro Philippe (Hanseatic Cities) 2023 from Belgium, is part of a series of coins that celebrate the Hanseatic League, a powerful mercantile and cultural organization that dominated trade in the Baltic Sea region during the Middle Ages. The coin's design features an image of Philippe, the patron saint of Hamburg, and the city's coat of arms, highlighting the city's rich history and cultural heritage.
