The Spanish Constitution was approved in a referendum by the Spanish people on December 6, 1978, being the only Magna Carta in the history of Spain that has been endorsed through free and direct consultation with citizens. With it, Spain became a modern parliamentary monarchy. The Spanish Constitution is the supreme legal norm of the State. One of the characteristic features of the Constitution of 78 is that it was reached by consensus among the different political formations of the parliamentary arch. Since 1986, Constitution Day has been celebrated. To mark the 40th anniversary of the Spanish Constitution, the FNMT-Real Casa de la Moneda has prepared a commemorative broadcast of such a significant date.

The 10 Euro coin commemorating Philip VI and the Spanish Constitution of 1978 features an unusual design element: the king's profile is shown facing to the left, which is a departure from the traditional right-facing portrait commonly seen on coins.
