Comment
In 2011 the Spanish painters series is dedicated to four important Spanish artists: Domenicos Theotocopoulos -El Greco- (1541-1614), Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617-1682), José de Ribera -El Españoleto- (1591-1652) and Francisco de Zurbarán (1598-1664). This is the fourth issue of the series called "Spanish Painters", with which we want to pay tribute to the most outstanding Spanish creators throughout history.
Jusepe de Ribera (1591 – 1652) was a Spanish painter and printmaker. Ribera, Francisco de Zurbarán, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, and the singular Diego Velázquez, are regarded as the major artists of Spanish Baroque painting. Referring to a series of Ribera exhibitions held in the late 20th century, Philippe de Montebello wrote "If Ribera's status as the undisputed protagonist of Neapolitan painting had ever been in doubt, it was no longer.
Interesting fact
The José de Ribera "El Españoleto" 10 Euro coin from Spain features an image of the famous Spanish Baroque painter on its obverse side, while the reverse side showcases one of his most famous works, "The Bearded Woman," which is a portrait of a woman with a beard. This unique and intriguing design makes the coin stand out among other coins in the series.
