Born in Paris on November 29, 1932 to parents from the Correze region, Jacques Chirac has spent more than 40 years in politics, and has held the highest offices in the French Republic. His career began in 1962, when he joined the cabinet of Prime Minister Georges Pompidou. At the same time, he was elected Municipal Councillor in Corrèze.In 1972, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture under President Georges Pompidou. In 1974, he rallied behind Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, who, once elected President, appointed him Prime Minister. He joined the French National Assembly, where he was elected Deputy in 1976. In 1977, he became the first Mayor of Paris to be elected by universal suffrage. Jacques Chirac was then appointed Prime Minister in 1986 during François Mitterrand's presidential term.
In 1995, Jacques Chirac was elected President of the Republic. In 2002, he won a landslide victory over Jean-Marie Le Pen. In 2007, he decided not to stand for re-election and devoted himself to his foundation, created in 2008. He died on September 26, 2019 at the age of 86.
