As the year 2019 marks the 200th anniversary of the opening of Museo Nacional del Prado, Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre-Real Casa de la Moneda is dedicating the sixth issue of the collection Treasures of Spanish Museums to this major event.
The complete set is comprised of six coins: three gold 2-escudo coins and three square pieces in silver.
The reverse of each of the coins, which are finished in proof quality, is illustrated with a small display of some of the most iconic works kept at the Prado. The obverse, which is common to all, reproduces the logo of the Prado Bicentenary, together with an image of the seated statue of Velázquez, which was executed by Aniceto Marinas in 1899 and now stands in front of Puerta de Velázquez at the Prado.

The Museo del Prado, officially known as Museo Nacional del Prado, is the main Spanish national art museum, located in central Madrid. It houses collections of European art, dating from the 12th century to the early 20th century, based on the former Spanish royal collection, and the single best collection of Spanish art.

Doménikos Theotokópoulos (Greek: Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος; 1 October 1541 – 7 April 1614), most widely known as El Greco, was a Greek painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. El Greco was a nickname, and the artist normally signed his paintings with his full birth name in Greek letters, often adding the word Κρής (Krḗs), which means "Cretan", in Ancient Greek.

Interesting fact

The 10 Euro silver coin commemorating 200 years of the Prado Museum - El Greco features an unique design, with the image of El Greco's famous painting "The Burial of the Count of Orgaz" on one side and the Spanish coat of arms on the other. This coin is a rare and beautiful collector's item for art enthusiasts and coin collectors alike.
