The Lech Walesa and Solidarity-1980 coin was issued to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Solidarity's founding in Poland. Solidarity was the first independent trade union in a communist country, and it played a significant role in the demise of communism in Eastern Europe. Lech Walesa, who was a prominent leader of Solidarity, went on to become the President of Poland in 1990. The coin's design features an image of Walesa and the Solidarity logo on one side, and the Liberian coat of arms on the other.
