In the run-up to this historic moment, the Royal Canadian Mint is proud to launch a coin marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of the country's principal architect of Confederation and first prime minister: Sir John A. Macdonald.Enhanced with selective gold plating and a frosted finish, this numismatic proof coin pays tribute to one of the most important figures in Canadian history.
About Sir John A. Macdonald
July 1, 1867 marked the creation of the Dominion of Canada, and Sir John A. Macdonald, one of its principal architects, became its first prime minister. On the same day, he was knighted by Queen Victoria for his role in Confederation; he led the new country until his death in 1891, except for an interruption from 1873 to 1878.
Born on January 11, 1815 in Glasgow, Scotland, John Alexander Macdonald immigrated with his family to Kingston, Upper Canada, in 1820; a successful lawyer, he was elected to municipal office in Kingston, then to the Upper Canada Cabinet in the late 1840s, as Receiver General and Commissioner of Public Lands. In 1854, he joined the Cabinet of the United Province of Canada, as Attorney General for Canada West. Assuming a heavy legislative load and providing important legal advice to various ministries, he was entrusted with increasing responsibilities until he and George-Étienne Cartier jointly headed the government.
By the 1860s, many political leaders in British North America felt that some form of constitutional amendment was needed. Surrounded by George Brown, George-Étienne Cartier and other colleagues, John A. Macdonald presented the idea of a united British North America to the leaders of the Maritime colonies at the Charlottetown Conference in September 1864, a concept that would take shape on July 1, 1867 with the creation of the Dominion of Canada. John A. Macdonald, its principal architect, became the first prime minister.
John A. Macdonald's tireless work sowed the seeds of a great sovereign country.
