Comment

To take a fresh look at the classic Silver Maple Leaf design, the Royal Canadian Mint's Research & Development team turned to the University of Ottawa's Photonics Research Centre. Together, these innovators have developed a technology that produces a dynamic optical effect on the coins. This effect is achieved by using mirrors measuring less than a millimetre in size and angle, engraved with the shape of corners and then coined into a fine silver blank. The result: when the coin is tilted, the silver Maple Leaf on the reverse appears to expand and contract, as if it were pulsating.

Brand-new technology and a classic motif come together in one splendid piece!

Special features
THE FIRST OF ITS KIND, THIS EXCEPTIONAL SILVER PIECE COMBINES CUTTING-EDGE PHOTONIC TECHNOLOGY WITH A CLASSIC MOTIF! Thanks to this technology, developed by the Royal Canadian Mint's Research & Development team and the University of Ottawa's Photonics Research Centre, the unforgettable silver Maple Leaf motif on the reverse appears to pulsate when the coin is tilted. The secret of the illusion? Tiny mirrors with very specific characteristics.
A PATTERN RECREATED USING SPECIAL MIRROR TECHNOLOGY! This technology enhances the latest issue in our popular series of 2-ounce fine silver collector coins, all inspired by the design of the famous Silver Maple Leaf bullion coin.
WORLD LIMITED EDITION of 3,000 pieces!
TWO OUNCES OF FINE SILVER! The coin is struck in two ounces of 99.99% pure silver.

Did you know?
The maple leaf motif on this coin was first used on silver and platinum bullion coins launched by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1988.
Although it is a collector (i.e. numismatic) coin, not a bullion coin, it features a motif associated with some of the world's most prized gold, silver and platinum bullion coins. Thanks to its state-of-the-art refining - particularly advanced for gold and silver - the Mint has been responsible for numerous global innovations, such as the first 99.99% pure gold bullion coin (in 1982) and the first 100-kilogram 99.999% pure gold bullion coin with a face value of $1 million (in 2007).
The pattern consists of an arrangement of retro-reflectors, each measuring less than a millimetre. The shape, size and orientation of all these small mirrors have been machined to a very high degree of precision, as have the angles of their edges, to produce the convincing illusion of palpitation. The effect was achieved thanks to photonics, a versatile physical science for producing, detecting and manipulating photons (particles of light), with applications in fields ranging from astrophysics to medical research. This science is present in the everyday lives of people all over the world in various forms: electronic products, telecommunications, manufacturing processes, etc.

Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a double-shell case featuring the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case comes with a black protective box.Automatically translated
