Comment
Despite its small size, the Ashy-headed Warbler (Setophaga magnolia) is easy to spot thanks to its black and yellow plumage. This little songbird chirps almost non-stop, punctuating summer days with its clear, soft whistles as it flits between the lower branches of trees. Except when defending her young, the warbler is not shy by nature: she is often seen proudly unfurling and waving her tail feathers, putting on a show of her colors, which have been rendered in all their splendor on this lovely piece!During the breeding season, this delightful songbird nests in coniferous forests from coast to coast, from Newfoundland and Labrador to British Columbia. The ash-headed warbler is a much-loved summer bird for its vivacity, color and song. Its presence further enhances the natural beauty of Canada's wilderness.
Special features
- This is the second program in the five-part series Colourful Songbirds of Canada, dedicated to the beauty of some of Canada's most remarkable bird species.
- The coin features the Ashy-headed Warbler, a magnificent little bird that nests in almost every Canadian forest in summer.
- Made from 99.99% pure silver, the coin is enhanced with touches of selective color that add vivacity to the finely chiseled warbler and recreate the hues it sports in the wild.
- A thoughtful gift for the amateur birder, art enthusiast or anyone who appreciates the timeless beauty of the warbler.
Did you know?
- The name of this songbird dates back to 1810, when the eminent ornithologist Alexander Wilson found a warbler in a magnolia tree, hence the Latin designation of the species. Over time, the term "magnolier" came to prevail over the bird's original English name (black-and-yellow warbler). Yet the Ashy-headed Warbler has rarely been seen in a magnolier since!
- The male Ashy-headed Warbler has two very distinctive songs, one for courtship and the other for nesting. He also has a less accented song, which he uses when defending his territory.
- The female's plumage is similar to that of the male, except that the gray replaces the black, softening the contrast of colors so striking in the male. During the breeding season, in late spring, the male becomes more daring and doesn't hesitate to parade his spectacular colors to impress a potential mate!
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a burgundy double-shell case adorned with the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case comes with a black protective box.
Interesting fact
The Magnolia Warbler coin is a unique and interesting piece because it features a species of bird that is not typically associated with Canadian wildlife. The Magnolia Warbler is a songbird that is native to the eastern United States and southeastern Canada, but it is not commonly found in the wild in Canada. This makes the coin a distinctive and collectible item for bird enthusiasts and coin collectors alike.
