Designed by Canadian artist Greg Banning, your coin features an outdoorsman, accompanied by his dog, paddling the tumultuous waters of Quebec’s Saint-Jean River toward the mouth of the St. Lawrence. The image is dominated by the rugged splendor of the untamed Saint-Jean. Dwarfed by tall stone cliffs and a powerful, fast-flowing river that snakes its way across the scene, the outdoorsman paddles his canoe while his dog stands alert at the bow. In the background, fast-flowing rapids and dense forest are captured in beautiful detail by Royal Canadian Mint engravers. The image is framed by an outer band engraved with maple leaves.

Canoeing along tree-lined riverbanks in the heart of nature... a typically Canadian scene that illustrates the country's unique history and the close relationship its people have with its vast territory. The Royal Canadian Mint is proud to celebrate this typical experience with an exciting series that allows us to explore Canada by canoe.Travel Diary, Week 6
Like two particles silently criss-crossing the watery undulations of a blue-green hinterland, the outdoor enthusiast and his faithful companion blend into the rocky relief and dark hues of the land. Here's the story of their Canadian canoe trip.
We canoed thousands of kilometers, a third of the way around our extraordinary planet. We crossed mountain ranges, criss-crossed the intricate river system of the Prairies, paddled the cliff-lined rivers of the Canadian Shield and sailed the tree-lined lakes of Eastern Canada. We contemplated the majestic beauty of maple, pine and cedar, and admired the riches of this vast country, as well as its deep-rooted history. Every moment was an immersion in the strong current of life. Today, we crossed the last bend of the Saint-Jean River, in Quebec's Côte-Nord region. Travelling these last few kilometers on the feisty Rivière Saint-Jean was no easy task. We had to maneuver through rapids, free ourselves from log jams and battle powerful currents, but nothing in the world beats the joy of such an adventure. We finally arrived at the mouth where the St. John River flows into the St. Lawrence, and stopped.
Here, on the north shore of the seaway, I let my gaze wander south-west, past the northern tip of Anticosti Island to the sea cliffs of the Gaspé Peninsula, before turning my eyes towards the islands of the Mingan Archipelago to the east and the Newfoundland coast to the north. Projecting myself beyond the distant shore, my mind imagines the ancient populations that came here before me. To the east, on the other side of the rocky Newfoundland landscape, opens the vast horizon of the Atlantic, which carried some of the men and women who trod this soil, while to the west, from where my companion and I have just arrived, unfolds the ancestral land of others. Isn't it wonderful that, despite their very different origins, they have, like me today, braved the waters of this enigmatic continent to come here, to contemplate the horizon from this shore, abandoning themselves to reverie for a moment, knowing that they had found a valiant land of welcome.
