Sixth in the popular Ducks of Canada series. The Canvasback (Aythya valisineria), North America's largest diving duck, is renowned for its exceptional physical abilities and the bright hues of the male's plumage. This formidable diver feeds mainly in shallow waters, but can dive to depths of over 9 meters if required. It also has a very powerful flight, reaching speeds of over 100 kilometers per hour.
The Canvasback weighs around one kilogram and stands almost 50 centimetres tall; the distance between its wingtips can be as much as 85 centimetres. Its body is round and thick, and its legs are webbed. The male has magnificent dark red plumage on his head; his chest, rump and tail are black, and his back, wings and belly are white, from which he takes his name. It also has a receding forehead and a rather long black beak. The male has bright red eyes. Thanks to her brown and white body and darker reddish-brown head, the female blends into the marsh vegetation, where she makes her nest.
The Greater Scaup spends the summer in breeding areas on lakes, ponds, basins and rivers in western North America, stretching from central Alaska and much of the Yukon and Alaska to the Arctic.most of Alberta, southern Saskatchewan and southern and western Manitoba, as well as the north-central United States. Unlike most other ducks, this species does not build its nest on land: the female lays her eggs on a floating nest made from marsh vegetation and lined with down. In late autumn, the Canvasback migrates south and winters on the Pacific coast of the U.S., in the south-central region of the U.S., along the eastern Atlantic coast, on the Gulf Coast (especially Louisiana) and in northern Mexico.
