The Bank of Canada began operations 75 years ago, in 1935. With a mandate to regulate the country's money supply and "promote the economic and financial welfare of Canada", it was given the exclusive right to issue bank bills in Canada. On March 11, 1935, the Bank of Canada introduced its first series of banknotes. The inaugural series of 1935 included denominations of $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, $500 and $1,000. (A $25 bill was issued later that year to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the coronation of King George V.) The front of the bills featured a portrait of a member of the Royal Family or a former Canadian Prime Minister. On the reverse were allegories symbolizing agriculture, industry and commerce in full expansion. Each denomination was offered in either French or English, a practice that ended in 1937, when bilingual bills were introduced.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 2010 $10 Canadian Silver Coin is that it has a unique reverse design that features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt. This design is different from the usual depiction of the Queen on Canadian coins, and it was specifically created for this coin to commemorate the Queen's visit to Canada in 2010.
