In 2007 the RAM launched an on-going series of Fine Gold (.999) NCLT Proof ten dollar coins depicting each Lunar year and their representative animals. This second coin in the series was issued in a capsule in a wooden box.Aluminium-bronze & Fine Silver (.999) $1 versions of the coin were also issued.
The Chinese Zodiac is based on a twelve year cycle, each year being represented by an animal. People born in the "Year of the Rat" are sensitive, imaginative and charming. they are generous to their loved ones, but can be quick-tempered.
Interestingly this is the only coin in the series that does not have an actual Chinese Character (for rat) on it. All the others do have a Chinese Character for the animal they depict.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 2008 Australian 10 Dollar Gold Proof Coin (4th Portrait - Year of the Rat) is that it features a unique reverse design by artist Natasha Muhl, which depicts two rats surrounded by Chinese symbols and motifs, celebrating the Year of the Rat in the Chinese lunar calendar.
