Released by the Royal Australian Mint in 2012 as part of the Kangaroo Gold Proof Series, this coin features the Mareeba Rock-Wallaby. This rare species of rock-wallaby can be found in northeastern Queensland, specifically in the highlands west of Cairns from around Mount Garnet to the Mitchell River and Mount Carbine, as well as inland to Mungana. This species was only identified as a separate species in 1992.In addition to the gold proof coin, the mint also released a 1oz silver proof coin and a 1oz silver reverse-frosted coin. There was also a colourised silver proof coin issued post-market with a limited 500 mintage.
This gold proof coin was struck in 1/10oz .9999 fine gold and issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965. Mintage is 1,500. Each coin is encapsulated and presented in a wooden two-piece presentation case held closed by magnets. A numbered Certificate of Authenticity is included.
