A giant of the Ice Age, the woolly mammoth is featured on the second in a series of investment products decorated with prehistoric representations.
A representative of Canada's prehistoric megafauna, Mammuthus primigenius measured over three meters at the withers and weighed close to eight tons (17,600 lbs). Its long, curved tusks make this fossil one of the most easily recognizable from Canada's Ice Age. The internal structure of each of these herbivores tells us a great deal about their health and environment.
Towards the end of the Pleistocene, around 100,000 years ago, the woolly mammoth roamed the frozen steppes of what is now Canada. Its thick fur and skin, small ears and tail are just some of the cold-adapted features that enabled it to thrive until around 12,000 years ago, when it began to disappear from the continent, although isolated populations survived until around 4,000 years ago. In 2022, a 30,000-year-old mummified baby woolly mammoth was discovered in the permafrost of a Yukon goldfield. Its perfectly preserved skin and fur make it the most complete specimen of a frozen mammoth ever discovered in North America.
