Comment
This is the first silver commemorative coin of the Federal Republic of Germany with a face value of 10DM.
The coin was mistakenly designed and issued with the inscription '20th Olympic Games IN GERMANY', but Olympic Games are always attributed to cities and not countries. The national Olympic committee of the German Democratic Republic complained, and a new coin with the inscription changed to 'IN MUNICH' was issued with the same mintage numbers again (below under 'See also')
The German Democratic Republic also banned the coin with the 'IN GERMANY' inscription from import.
Of the roughly 1 billion DM turnover from the issuance of 100 million coins across the 5 (+1 corrected) motives in the series, more than 600 million DM remained after deduction of costs and were used to finance the construction of buildings in the Olympic Park in Munich.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted to commemorate the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, and it features a unique design that showcases the country's pride in hosting the international event.
