Comment
Christopher Ironside, who taught life drawing at the Royal College of Art and had designed a few medals in the past for the Royal Mint, was the artist responsible for the reverse designs on the the first decimal coins that entered circulation in the UK from 1968, but the process of producing the coin designs started many years before that. The designs for these 1963 dated uniface patterns were produced by Ironside on behalf of the Royal College of Art and the Royal Designers for Industry in response to a request from the Royal Mint to submit designs for a new decimal currency. We are indebted to the Royal Mint Museum for sharing this image and data.Interesting fact
The Pattern 10 Decimal Pence (Uniface Pattern) 1963 from the United Kingdom is interesting because it was never officially released into circulation. It was created as a pattern coin, which means it was produced as a trial or sample coin to test the design and production process, but it was never minted in large quantities or distributed to the public. As a result, it is a rare and sought-after collector's item among numismatists.
