Comment

The total disappearance of fractional currency in Olot imposed the need to create smaller values to facilitate changes and the Municipal Government Commission agreed, in a session of September 8, 1037, to issue metallic coins of values 10 and 15 Centimos for a total amount of 6,250 Pesetas. This agreement was ratified by the Plenary Session of the Municipal Council on September 24, 1937.
These coins were minted in iron by the Vilaseca i Bassa blacksmith shop in Barcelona. Due to the material (iron without any alloy) the minting was very problematic so the coins in many cases are very defective and, in the case of the 15 Centimos especially (but not only), many did not circulate, believing that the total value of the minted in circulation may be around a hundred coins of the 25,000 initially planned.

Interesting fact

The 10 Centimos (Olot) 1937 coin was issued during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and features a unique design that reflects the political and social climate of the time. The coin's obverse side features a portrait of a woman representing the Spanish Republic, while the reverse side depicts a landscape with a factory and a train in the background, symbolizing the country's industrialization and modernization efforts. The coin's design was created by the artist and sculptor, Josep Clarà, who was known for his modernist style and his use of bold, geometric shapes. Despite its small denomination, the 10 Centimos (Olot) 1937 coin is a valuable collector's item today, with some mint-condition coins selling for hundreds of euros.
