Comment
A rather rare assay, struck at the Brussels mint.Probst mentions two different types for this copper test. He differentiates them by the size of the escutcheon: large for L#335-2 and reduced for L#355-3. This is undeniable, but the differences between the two variants are far more numerous:
Obverse:
- L#355-2 (large shield) L#355-3 (small shield)
85-grain thick inner grenetis 91-grain fine inner grenetis
Large differences spaced apart ° Small differences close together
Different from the two-headed engraver ° Different from the one-headed engraver
Striated shield bars with 5 lines ° Striated shield bars with 7 lines
° etc.
Reverses:
- L#355-2 (large shield) L#355-3 (small shield)
Large, widely spaced numerals ° Thin, closely spaced numerals ° Horizontal line below value
Horizontal line under value ° No horizontal line under value
ESSAI and rosettes large ° ESSAI and rosettes small
Oak branch with 14 acorns ° Oak branch with 12 acorns
° etc
Also available in silver / piéfort - 25 g. (L#335-1)
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Pattern 10 Centimes - Adolphe (Essai) 1889 from Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (Luxembourg) made of Copper weighing 10.2g is that it features a unique design that was never adopted for circulation. The coin was minted as a pattern, or trial coin, and bears the image of Adolphe, the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, on one side and the coat of arms of Luxembourg on the other. The coin's design was created by the artist Jean-Baptiste Fuchs, and it is considered a rare and valuable collector's item among numismatists.
