François Duvalier, known as "Papa Doc", was elected president in 1957. After several attempted coups d'état, he created a militia called "les tontons macoutes",he created a militia called the "Tontons Macoutes" and ruled with terror. He was appointed president for life and had the constitution amended to allow his son Jean-Claude to succeed him in 1971.
