This type is sometimes referred to as ducato rather than zecchino; the two terms carry the same notion of value: the term ducato being inherited from the coinage of the doges of Venice while the term zecchino will appear with the minting of said ducato by Zecca mint around 1545.

Variations are known in the obverse legend.

Some variants were minted later once the master arrived in Malta around 1530.
