The Pattern 1 Yuan (Pattern) 18 (1929) coin was designed by the renowned Chinese artist, Xu Beihong, who was also a famous painter and calligrapher. He was commissioned by the National Government to design a new currency for the Republic of China, and his design was ultimately adopted for the 1 Yuan coin. The coin features a portrait of Sun Yat-sen, the founder of the Republic of China, on the obverse, and a scenic view of the Yangtze River on the reverse. The use of silver in the coin's composition was a deliberate choice to symbolize the country's wealth and prosperity.
