The 2008 People's Republic of China 1 Yuan Gymnastics commemorative coin is unique in that it features a gymnast in mid-air, performing a split, on the obverse (front side) of the coin. This design was chosen to symbolize the agility and flexibility of gymnasts, and to highlight the importance of gymnastics in Chinese sports culture. The coin's reverse side features the National Emblem of the People's Republic of China, surrounded by the words "People's Republic of China" in Chinese characters.
