Not much is known about these early Kweichow coins. At the time, Kweichow did not have a mint, so instead, the province instead operated furnaces where sycee and ingots were refined and molded. These coins were called "silver cakes" based on their shape.Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Standard circulation coin 1 Yuan - Guangxu ("Silver cake") 16 (1890) from Kweichow Province (Chinese provinces) made of Silver weighing 22.60 g is that it was minted during the reign of Emperor Guangxu, who was the only emperor of the Qing dynasty to issue coins in his own name. This coin was part of a series of silver coins issued by the Qing government to address the shortage of small denomination coins in circulation at the time.
