The 1 Yeni Kuruş coin was introduced in 2005 as a replacement for the 1 Kuruş coin, which had been in circulation since 1946. The new coin was designed to have a more modern look and feel, and it featured a depiction of the Turkish Republic's founding father, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, on its obverse side. The coin's reverse side features the denomination and the year of minting, surrounded by a wreath of olive branches.
