The 1 Xerafim coin from Portuguese India, issued during the reign of João IV (1650-1652), was the first coin to feature the image of a Portuguese king on an Indian coin. This was a significant departure from the previous coins issued in India, which had always featured the image of a local ruler or a symbol of the region.
