Comment

In 1391, a Buddhist monk named Pham Su On (范師温) called on the farmers in Quoc Oai (modern Hanoi) to rise in rebellion against the weakening Tran dynasty, which succeeded in the occupation of the capital of Thang Long. Pham Su On adopted Thiên Thánh as his regnal name, but his effective reign only lasted for three days, and the leader of the short-lived uprising was put to death by being slowly cut to pieces. While this is a popular theory proposed in Annam and Its Minor Currency by Eduardo Toda y Güell, Canadian numismatist Dr. Alexander Fishman suggests that this claim is likely incorrect, dating the Thiên Thánh Nguyen Bao to the last half of the 16th century.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during the Sử Thiên Thánh Rebellion, which was a dynastic rebellion that took place in Vietnam in the late 14th century. The rebellion was led by Pham Su On, who was a powerful noble who opposed the ruling dynasty and sought to establish his own kingdom. The coin was likely used as a means of financing the rebellion and spreading propaganda for the rebel cause. Despite the rebellion's failure, coins like this one remain as a fascinating piece of history and a testament to the political and social upheaval of the time.
