Comment
John Frederick I "the magnanimous," Elector of Saxony and head of the Schmalkaldic League was allied with Philip I "the magnanimous," Landgrave of Hesse druing the Schmalkaldic War. They were defeated at the Battle of Mühlberg on April 24 1547 and John Frederick was captured and forced to give up the Electorate of Saxony or be executed as a result of the Capitulation of Wittenberg.Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique double portrait of John Frederick and Philip, who were co-rulers of the Electorate of Saxony during that time. This double portrait design was a departure from the traditional single-ruler design seen on most coins and was a deliberate choice to reflect the joint rule of the two leaders.
