Christian II, born in Dresden on September 23, 1583 and died in the same city on June 23, 1611, was Elector of Saxony, Count Palatine of Saxony and Margrave of Misnia from 1591 until his death.
When his father Christian I died in 1591, Christian, the eldest of the 3 brothers and heir, was just eight years old.
His distant cousin, Duke Frederick William of Saxony-Altenburg, was appointed regent and ruled in his name and that of his two brothers, John George and Augustus, until his death in 1602.
Christian then took over the electorate with the help of his two brothers, under the name of Christian II.
As he had no children of his own, he was succeeded by his younger brother Jean-Georges, who died in 1611.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during a time of great cultural and artistic flourishing in Saxony, with the reign of Christian II and John George I seeing the establishment of numerous libraries, museums, and theaters.
