Interesting fact
The 1838 Token 1 Stiver from British Guiana (now Guyana) is interesting because it was one of the first coins to feature a portrait of a British monarch, King William IV, on a coin issued by a British colony. This was a departure from the traditional practice of featuring an image of the British monarch on the obverse (front) side of the coin, and instead, the monarch's portrait was placed on the reverse (back) side. This design change was a result of the royal proclamation of 1833, which allowed the colonies to issue their own coins with the monarch's portrait on the reverse, while still maintaining the British crown's authority and approval. This coin, therefore, represents an early example of the gradual shift towards greater autonomy and self-governance in the British colonies.
